The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Director, Energy Supply Chain opportunity, you will have:
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in energy management, procurement, trading, and/or efficiency programs.

  • A thorough understanding of renewable sources of energy.
  • Outstanding data analysis skills, and the ability to effectively communicate the results of analysis to executive level management.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain. An MBA is preferred.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP) is preferred but not required.
  • Proven strong leadership skills.
  • A professional demeanor and the ability to interact effectively with people at all levels.
Our preference is that you are based in Dallas, but we also will consider highly qualified candidates in the Houston area.

You will need to be willing and able to travel domestically and internationally. During the first year, you may travel in North America 40% to 50% of the time, although we expect travel will diminish after that. Most likely you will travel once a year each to the UK and Australia to connect with counterparts in EMEA and APAC.

The Role

Reporting to the VP, Supply Chain & Procurement, you will supervise an Analyst, and this team should grow in the future. Your mission will be to lead the procurement of energy supply for Digital Realty’s portfolio of data centers. This will include leading efforts to develop and execute best-in-class strategies to reduce the cost of energy supply. You'll have direct responsibility for energy procurement for North America, while providing leadership and expertise to align with global energy initiatives.

While there is a strong strategic element to this role, there also will be more hands-on work. You'll conduct a good deal of analysis to back up your strategies, and you also make get down "in the weeds" to examine utility bills, understand where the costs are, and work with suppliers to lower costs.

In addition, you will act as a consultant and partner to energy procurement leaders in EMEA and APAC. This will include holding a regular cadence of meetings to ensure strategic alignment.

More specifically, you will:
  • Provide leadership within Digital Realty on all energy procurement initiatives, and increase stakeholder engagement in energy procurement initiatives.
  • Assume responsibility for monitoring forward electricity markets to recommend buying opportunities in U.S. deregulated markets.
  • Consider capacity management opportunities.
  • Assume responsibility for risk management strategies in critical U.S. markets, and analyze, recommend and execute electricity hedges to lower total cost of ownership and mitigate risk.
  • Develop and manage critical supplier relationships, increasing value throughout the supply chain.
  • Monitor, analyze and report key performance metrics. Develop and enhance internal reporting.
  • Research, recommend and implement energy reporting tools and other technologies to support energy procurement.
  • Work closely with Portfolio Management and Operations on energy efficiency and demand response programs.
