The Requirements
To be a good fit for the Data Center Manager opportunity, you will have:

- Proven experience (5+ years) leading Chief Engineers and operating engineers
- A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Solid and proven experience in the construction, commissioning, acceptance and operation of mission critical systems, including state-of-the-art electrical distribution systems, static and rotary UPS, emergency standby generation, fire alarm/suppression and monitoring systems
- Extensive knowledge of structured cabling systems, networking and connectivity standards, and hardware installation requirements
- Proficient experience in colocation operations, including the installation and deployment of cage, rack and cable infrastructure, as well as, power circuit installation and power monitoring
- Experience working with and deploying telecom and network providers, specifically in “Meet Me Room” (MMR) and POP room environments
- Experience managing a change control environment
- Strong quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills, with demonstrated ability to determine event root causes, performance shortfalls and required corrective actions
- Knowledge of industry data center standards, policies & methodologies
- Knowledge of performance management & critical awareness methods, and implementation standards
- Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience managing a budget and analyzing expenses
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and familiarity with Microsoft Project, Visio and/or AutoCad
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and power metering systems
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Real Estate Manager, as Data Center Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the execution of data center operations at our Houston and Austin facilities. While you'll be seated in Houston, you can plan on routinely traveling to Austin for one or two days every other week. Of course, if problems arise -- a critical event or customer issue, for example -- you would travel to the site immediately to problem solve, manage the team directly, and meet with customers as necessary.Between the two centers, you'll manage technical teams totaling 15 to 18 engineers. The teams include a Chief Engineer at each location, the technicians who work in the data center and the operating engineers who maintain the critical equipment that service the raised floor environment. Critical equipment is the electrical system (including its distribution), but also the mechanical systems (cooling - chillers, RTU's, CRAH, CRAC). You'll have an advantage in that both locations have a strong Chief Engineer in place to help you in your efforts. Of course, even with that talent in place, this is not a role to be managed from behind a desk. You'll be out of the floor, visible, working with your teams and customers directly as you manage data center operations. As Data Center Manager, you will leverage your strong experience in data center electrical, mechanical and network system operations and possess knowledge of large scale data centers, including state-of-the-art electrical distribution systems, static and rotary UPS, emergency standby generation, and fire alarm/suppression and monitoring systems. In addition, you will participate in the scheduling, coordination and completion all significant planned and emergency maintenance events for the facility and ensure these activities are executed in a controlled and proven method to ensure the reliability of the critical loads supported by these systems. Ultimately, you will be responsible for identifying, evaluating and executing operational strategies to ensure Digital Realty’s data center operations achieve the highest level of availability.
Data center operations include, but are not limited to:
- Engineering operations and core infrastructure maintenance
- Technical event management including post-event root cause analysis and infrastructure repair
- Data center construction management, commissioning and start-up
- Delivery of data center services including colocation, connectivity, raised floor services and deployment
- Installation and management of all cable and network infrastructure supporting facility and customer connectivity

This is a meaty, multifaceted role requiring a broad and diverse skillset, but beyond your talent and technical abilities, you'll need core competencies such as a deep sense of urgency and the organizational skill to manage multiple, often conflicting priorities while keeping operations running smoothly. You will leverage outstanding communication and interpersonal skills in order to oversee the team and build relationships with your customers. You'll also be expected to combine urgency with communication when responding to events. While you'll work days, you'll be on call 24/7/365 and your ability to effectively mange critical event calls will be key to your success in this role.This is a visible role where you'll enjoy a lot of interaction with departments and staff throughout all levels of the organization. As you'd expect, your technical skills will be paramount to your success, but strong leadership and communication skills will be equally essential. You'll speak with high-level customers and should be able to verbally demonstrate your expertise. You will also develop and write emails at a level that Fortune 100 companies would expect, as well as write green events.
