The Requirements
To meet the basic qualifications for this role you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Design Manager opportunity, you also should have:- A bachelor's degree in a related discipline. Professional license (Architect or Engineer) is desired but not required.
- Significant experience managing technically complex projects, including:
- Demonstrated knowledge of architecture, electrical, mechanical, control and fire detection/suppression implementation in data center environments.
- The ability to direct and manage internal and external resources.

- Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction industry.
- General knowledge of design and construction terms and principles and contracts.
- Familiarity with basic building code requirements.
- Computer literacy in the use of MS Office software and AutoCAD.

The Role
Reporting to the Director of Design, East, you will join a Design Team and assume responsibility for implementing Digital Realty's Design & Engineering Guidelines/ Standards. You'll lead the design of multiple, concurrent projects throughout the U.S. We'll look to you to manage challenging deliverables against aggressive project expectations (within budget and schedule objectives set for each project).More specifically, you will:
- Direct and oversee professional consultants (architects, engineers) and equipment suppliers.
- Apply Digital Realty (DLR) Design & Engineering Guidelines / Standards to all projects to assure that standards are up-to-date with industry best practices and meet Company’s business objectives (emphasis on value-engineering).
- Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures.
- Act as the primary customer contact, on build-to-suit projects, for the development of customized datacenter development projects. This will include leading the consultant team, preparing detailed development of work letters including program (scope), budget (emphasis on value-engineering) and schedule documents to support DLR leasing activities.
- Develop and maintain vendor relationships (contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, etc.) to provide cost-effective services for DLR projects.
- Prepare requests for proposals and evaluate proposals and recommendations to management regarding vendor selection.
- Communicate the status of projects to both internal and external stakeholders on an ad-hoc and formal basis. This will include preparing monthly project reports regarding the budget, schedule and scope objectives of assigned projects.

To excel in the role, you will be well versed at managing designs and the design process, and you’ll also be a “jack of all trades” with knowledge in technical engineering, architecture, electronics, data center critical infrastructure and more. We’ll expect you to adhere to our standards, deliver projects on time and within budget and provide excellent customer service along the way.In addition to working closely with a team of professional contractors and consultants, you’ll also have significant interaction with internal departments including Sales, Engineering, Asset Management and the Portfolio group -- which will call on your excellent relationship building and interpersonal communication skills. You’ll need a level of political savvy and influencing skills as you work to get everyone on the same page and in compliance with specific guidelines, budgets and standards.
