The Role

High-reaching Mission
Reporting to the Vice President, HR Business Partners, you will serve as our first solely dedicated strategic HR resource. Upon joining us, you will be responsible for learning the organization through interactions with leadership and other key stakeholders, uncovering and observing programs/processes already in place, and fully understanding business needs and short- and long-term objectives. You will then take a strategic approach to creating partnerships and working to align business objectives with employee programs. Your goal is to implement initiatives and value-added services that will deliver an outstanding employee experience even in our rapidly and ever-changing environment. This will take place in part as you push the organization to be engaged through effective communications tools and promote a proactive rather than reactive approach. You will set the tone, bring cutting-edge programs/initiative to the table and provide strategic and consultative support.

Client Group Focused, Change Management Driven
In concert with Human Resources leaders, you will design, evolve/enhance and implement core HR practices and programs established at and/or added to Digital Realty's practices that contribute at the hands-on level to the cultivation of a vibrant workforce and culture. Your assignment will be designed around a specific client group(s) (e.g. Ops, Sales, IT, Accounting, etc.) with employees dispersed across multiple North American locations. This position will support corporate departments as well as business unit divisions and site locations.

As Strategic HR Business Partner, you will serve as a key resource to your client group as you help shape the talent strategy and provide counsel on all things people related: performance management, talent development, leadership coaching, employee relations and organizational effectiveness. With the addition of Telx, there is a tremendous amount of integration under way (for example, we're just implementing a new HRIS system) and change is a constant, so your ability to use the fundamentals of change management processes to gain buy-in and help people adapt will be key. You will take a high-level approach to proactively working with business leaders to grow their organizations and manage change. You will advise and coach leaders to help them grow teams that consistently deliver their best work. Sometimes you'll leverage an analytical, data-driven approach, while at other times you will rely on your interpersonal finesse and strong presentation skills.

More specifically, you will:
  • Support all aspects of people management, including workforce planning, leadership development, performance management, succession planning, critical skills gap analysis and human capital metric analysis.
  • Proactively reach out to managers and business units to drive initiatives and programs regarding people management practices including, but not limited to, development of workforce plans, talent management and succession plans.
  • Set the human resources agenda by developing a keen understanding of the business goals and strategies, and providing support and resources for driving organizational initiatives in support of those strategies.
  • Support each phase of the change management process to ensure that the workforce and key stakeholders are prepared for organizational growth and change.
  • Work closely with the Leadership Team, both within the business and within the greater HR organization, to drive effective change and develop a customer centric, engaged workforce.
  • Act as a highly trusted coach and strategic advisor to management and employees by providing advice and guidance on talent needs.
  • Effectively communicate and roll out HR initiatives, policies and programs to managers and their business units; measure effectiveness.
  • Diagnose individual, team, and organizational issues that are negatively impacting culture and performance and recommend and facilitate delivery of the appropriate programs/plans to increase performance.
  • Address employee relations matters, anticipate people-related risks, and develop plans and actions to mitigate risks and address concerns.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to the day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance. Partner with Legal Department as needed.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Why Digital Realty

Ground-floor opportunity
You will get in on the ground floor as the first member, behind the VP, of a highly strategic HR team. That means that you will have the eyes of our leaders upon you and your successes will be noticed. It also means that while many stakeholders understand the relevance of this position and are onboard, others need to be shown its value. You will earn buy-in and credibility as you go.

Help shape your role
Because this is a ground-floor opportunity, you will be in the enviable position of helping to define and shape your role. We expect that you'll take on a higher percentage of tactical duties as the position develops, but the lion's share of your work will be strategic and that focus will increase over time.

Create programs and initiatives
As you're shaping the role you will also help create new programs and initiatives and make an impact early on and over the long-haul. This is not just about communicating programs and initiatives, but about having a direct hand in developing them!

Strategic insight; career development
You will not only have the opportunity to make an impact early on, you will gain deep insight into the thoughts of our leaders and fully understand the strategy and design of the company and our growth initiatives. Knowledge is a valuable key to succession planning and you will be in a prime position to advance in this role or another within Digital Realty.

Professional development
While this is a fun role, it’s also one you will need to unpack as you delve into it more deeply. You are bound to find areas where you can further develop and grow your skills, enhancing your foundation of HR and business knowledge, as well as polishing your professional skills.

Exciting time to join
With the acquisition of Telx, Digital Realty adds robust colocation, strategic network dense connectivity, a vast and open partner ecosystem and unmatched freedom of choice to one of the world's largest data center footprints. As we integrate processes and teams from the two companies, you will be in a prime position to make your mark.

The "best of both worlds"
You'll find that working for our company may be a little bit different. We are small enough, with only 1300 employees across our global portfolio, that your hard work will be visible throughout the organization, yet our extensive offering of services and solutions and proven track record of growth; stability and industry-leading innovation give you the resources and tools you need to take your career to the next level.

Unique culture
We are a collaborative, people-focused company dedicated to quality and continuous improvement. When you become a member of our team, you receive our commitment to your continued development and support. As you support those in your client group, we will also support you.

Strong foundation
Our financial strength and stability provide our customers with the assurance that Digital Realty and Telx will be their partner for current data center needs and those in the future, and our investment credit ratings provide us access to paths for more capital. We view each of our customers as a long-term partner.

Green standard for sustainability
We are committed to improving the performance and energy efficiency of our data centers through the creation, adoption and promotion of industry-leading best data center practices and experience. We are pioneers in thinking about green data centers and are also a Contributing Member of The Green Grid.

Excellent compensation
In addition to a competitive compensation and bonus opportunity, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus some pleasant surprises, like multiple flexible spending plans, a generous company match on the 401(k) plan, and much more.

Collins gives you a glimpse of the features and amenities that make Digital Realty the data center provider of choice around the world. Keys to Success

Change is the constant that both drives and challenges us. To thrive here, you will embrace change and use it as an effective tool for improving processes and performance, and for enhancing the individual employee experience. For example, currently we are actively designing a Total Rewards program that will help attract, motivate and retain top talent; minimize bureaucracy and maximize user friendliness; and incorporate reporting and controls appropriate to a public company. This program is an example of the kind of strategic thinking that aligns business needs while promoting a positive employee experience. You will be tasked with helping to discover and implement key strategies that satisfy the multiple needs of the business, employees, human resources and your client group.

Of course, positive change takes time and considerable effort. You should be imaginative and forward thinking enough to envision what success looks like and build backwards from there. In your first year, you will know you’re successful if you are:
  • Fully cognizant of the needs of your client group and the business, and have full understanding of available resources.
  • Actively participating in and advancing an HR partnership model. Gaining solid buy-in and support from key stakeholders and leaders, and enjoying a solid level of engagement from the business unit.
  • Working to revamp or roll out new and/or improved programs, such as performance management, talent management, a rewards and recognition program, etc., which have easily utilized tools and are effectively adopted by the organization.
  • Helping build HR metrics and reports that you can use to measure and report on the health of the team/organization and to identify gaps.
Your goal is to know everything, but not answer every question. You’ll leverage the resources around you to manage the tactical while you develop at the strategic level.
