- Read, analyze, and interpret relevant financial reports, legal documents, accounting pronouncements, regulations, and corporate policies
- Respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, members of the business community, peer professionals, and management
- Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and direct and/or contractor employees
- Read and interpret construction contracts, lien releases, and other pertinent construction documents

The Role
Reporting to the Director of Accounting, as Construction Accountant, you will work on large capital projects (which we call “scale” projects) in conjunction with others on the Construction Accounting team. This is the most junior role on the team, but that does not mean that it’s an easy role. In fact, we think that you will find a good deal more rigor in this role than you would find in similar roles at other companies. It will take your full range of general accounting, construction cost accounting, and interpersonal skills to do it well.Upon joining us, you will dedicate yourself to learning the company, data center industry, and Digital Realty’s unique processes and procedures. To help you get up to speed, you will enjoy strong training from an outstanding, highly experienced supervisor, as well as the support of the Construction Accounting team, including five construction accountants located in our San Francisco corporate offices where you'll work, and two international team members located in Europe. There is a strong mix of talent and experience on the team, including several senior-level members. With your runway for growth and dedication to learning, you can quickly add to your skillset to better support the team and organizational goals.
A good deal of your responsibilities will be centered on gathering, reviewing and posting information into the Yardi Property Management System. That will include contracts, purchase orders, change orders, pay applications, etc. You will learn the codes and posting system, and apply the principles of accounting to record and analyze financial information and prepare financial reports. There is large volume of work but it will be critical that you are not doing rote data entry. You will need to satisfy yourself that the posted information is correct and accurate, following up with various stakeholders as needed (construction managers, project managers, accountants, etc.) and asking pertinent questions to complete your work.
Specifically, you will:
- Develop, implement, and maintain construction management system, including setting up projects (jobs), budgets, job costs, cost codes, contracts, change orders, purchase orders, and various construction progress reports
- Review and analyze capitalization of costs
- Manage process for proper coding of construction invoices (payment applications) and lien releases for contractor and vendor invoices. Maintain contract documents including records of lien releases in appropriate files

- Implement, document, and maintain internal controls and systems, including Sarbanes-Oxley 404 controls. Interface with internal and external auditors. Prepare/gather materials related to construction and cost accounting matters for internal and external auditors
- Coordinate/interface with cost accounting system software provider
