The Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this role you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Design Manager opportunity, you also should have:
  • A bachelor's degree in a related discipline. Professional license (Architect or Engineer) is desired but not required.
  • Significant experience managing technically complex projects, including:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction industry.
  • General knowledge of design and construction terms and principles and contracts.
  • Familiarity with basic building code requirements.
  • Computer literacy in the use of MS Office software and AutoCAD.
  • Financial acumen to recommend, review and analyze budgets and estimates.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will join a Design Team and assume responsibility for implementing Digital Realty's Design & Engineering Guidelines/ Standards. You'll lead the design of multiple, concurrent projects throughout the U.S. We'll look to you to provide strategic and innovative thinking regarding the design and engineering of datacenter development projects and manage challenging deliverables against aggressive project expectations (within budget and schedule objectives set for each project). You will take a design from concept, assemble a team and define the scope of the project. It will be your job to hire, direct and oversee a team of professional consultants, including architects, engineers, and equipment suppliers.

More specifically, you will:
  • Apply Digital Realty (DLR) Design & Engineering Guidelines / Standards to all projects to assure that standards are up-to-date with industry best practices and meet the Company's business objectives (with an emphasis on value-engineering).
  • Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures.
  • Act as the primary customer contact on build-to-suit projects for the development of customized datacenter development projects. This will include leading the consultant team, preparing detailed development of work letters including program (scope), budget (emphasis on value-engineering) and schedule documents to support DLR leasing activities.
  • Develop and maintain vendor relationships (contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, etc.) to provide cost-effective services for DLR projects.
  • Prepare requests for proposals, evaluate proposals and make recommendations to management regarding vendor selection.
  • Communicate the status of projects to both internal and external stakeholders on an ad-hoc and formal basis.
  • Prepare monthly project reports regarding the budget, schedule and scope objectives of assigned projects.
