The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Network Engineer opportunity, you will have:

  • Expert knowledge of Cisco products, their functionality, configuration and best practices
  • Advanced networking knowledge, with emphasis on Cisco networking solutions
  • Strong knowledge of QOS, IP SLA, DMVPN, MPLS, SIP, PRI and IPsec
  • Experience with Cisco AnyConnect VPN
  • Working knowledge of BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and Spanning Tree
  • Experience with Cisco FirePOWER security products
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows networking configuration and protocols
  • Experience with error investigation, troubleshooting and root cause analysis
Preferred candidates also will have familiarity with:
  • Force10 network hardware and configuration
  • Palo Alto firewalls and configuration
  • SolarWinds monitoring platform
Our preference is that you are based at one of our facilities in Reston, and Dallas would be our second choice. However, we will consider highly qualified candidates based in other Digital Realty locations. You should plan on traveling about twice a year to meet with vendors and/or teammates. In addition, you'll need to be willing and able to participate in an on-call rotation with three other Network Engineers. On-call involves serving as a tier 3 escalation resource.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, IT Service Operations, you will join a team that includes three other Network Engineers and two Systems Engineers. In this role you will work closely with our corporate services, operations, and other groups to implement and maintain quality and customer focused solutions. You'll invest the majority of your time in four areas:
  • Project-based work, which will include:
    • Rollout of new technologies
    • Integration to support mergers & acquisitions
    • Design and implementation for greenfield data center construction
  • Daily break/fix activities and tier 3 support; this will include documenting and assigning issues to vendors, and managing vendor relationships
More specifically, you will:
  • Work with stakeholders to gather requirements
  • Design and implement network solutions
  • Provide tier 3 / SME and on-call support for network infrastructure
  • Serve as escalation point for resolving complex problems requiring advanced skills and research capability
  • Schedule and implement regular patches and upgrades per established process, which includes working in coordination with operations, corporate services and information security teams

As such, we are looking for a highly skilled and motivated person who can administer enterprise solutions as well as be flexible enough to explore revolutionary or “outside the box” ideas to get the job done. To excel in this role you will take pride in being a subject matter expert in your domain -- Cisco IOS and networking in general. -- and also be motivated to explore the many other areas of IT.

If you don't have a lot of experience working with managed service providers, you may find this role heavier in project management than you're used to. The upside, of course, is that we contract out a lot of administrator functions, freeing our team up to focus on higher level activities.

The pace is fast and expectations are high. The team works hard, but we also have fun in the process.
