We have two Mission Critical Engineer I opportunities available at our NYC facilities, so feel free to share this information with your networks. You will train on the first shift (7:30 am - 3:30 pm) then move to the night shift (11 pm - 7:30 am). You will work either Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday but should have the flexibility to work any shift.

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Mission Critical Engineer I opportunity, you will have:
  • At least 1-year of experience in mission-critical facilities including operating / engineering or equivalent equipment experience with assets associated with mission-critical engineering (HVAC, UPS, generators, fire/life safety systems) 
  • Hands-on electrical or mechanical skill and competence in the area of non-expertise (i.e., electrical expertise with mechanical competence, or vice-versa)
  • Strong knowledge of UPS systems and architectures, and cooling systems and architectures
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations and equipment and their risks (e.g., N+1, 2N, ATS/ STS, failover scenarios)
  • Strong knowledge of energy efficiency principals
  • Basic understanding of emergency situations and escalation processes

Reporting directly to the Manager of Facility Engineering, as Mission Critical Engineer I, you will be assigned to one or two of our three premier New York City data center properties where you'll serve as a contributing member of the site level Data Center Operations team. Working with at least one other engineer on your assigned shift, you will contribute to the daily site operations, including creating and modifying site operating procedures, creating change management tickets, delivering timely incident reports, and performing site maintenance, repairs and inspections to help ensure Digital Realty’s data center operations achieve the highest level of availability.  

Each shift, you will monitor the operations of the building, performing rounds and responding to issues that arise including adjustments to the HVAC, electrical, BMS, emergency generators and fire/life safety systems. You'll maintain chilled water, air conditioning, ventilating and other mechanical and electrical equipment. Pivotal to your success will be your ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment and systems independently. You should be eager to expand your skills and take on a variety of duties.

More About the Requirements
In addition to the basics described under The Requirements tab, you will also need:
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills; ability to respond effectively, verbally and in writing to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientation 
  • Physical ability to make rounds in the 3rd largest building in NYC (daily rounds can take 6 hours)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Strong understanding of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and power metering systems preferred
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills, with demonstrated ability to determine event root causes, performance shortfalls and required corrective actions preferred
  • Trade school is preferred
More About the Role
In addition to the responsibilities described in The Role tab, your specific responsibilities will include:
  • Monitoring and maintaining all building systems and mission-critical facilities equipment and other equipment associated with the data center environment including mechanical, electrical, emergency generators, fire/life safety systems and associated equipment. 
  • Conducting routine, ongoing assessment of the building systems operations.
  • Performing tests and rounds, and analyzing data to assure the proper functioning of equipment.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on all building equipment.
  • Working on building management programs for a mission-critical facilities environment.
  • Ensuring efficient operation of all building systems.
  • Assisting, as necessary, with scheduling of preventive maintenance, contracted maintenance and general maintenance with minimum disruption of building services. Coordinating maintenance efforts, as needed, with outside contractors, tenant finish personnel and engineers.
  • Maintaining lighting in all areas of the building.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety procedures as well as utilization of protective equipment.
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with tenants, owners, property management and vendors.
  • Assisting in updating and/or maintaining as-built drawings.
  • Responding quickly to emergency situations (fire, evacuation, equipment failure, etc.) and customer concerns.
  • Assisting with maintaining inventory control programs / purchasing parts and supplies.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable codes, requisitions, government agencies and Digital directives as they relate to building operations.
