To meet the basic qualification for the Tax Manager opportunity, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the role, you will have:

  • Solid experience with and knowledge of REIT, corporate and partnership taxation.
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with MS Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Solid organizational skills and good attention to detail.
  • The ability to achieve goals independently as well as to contribute as a team player.
Preferred but not required:
  • Real estate investment trust (REIT) and real estate tax experience.

You will join a small global tax team. You will report to the Tax Director who is in charge of tax compliance, take some direction from the director managing REIT, and interact with team members in the U.S., Europe and Asia. You will work on projects and activities including a mix of those listed below but will typically spend most of your time working in REIT compliance and general corporate tax compliance.

More specifically, you will:

  • Coordinate with and manage our outside tax preparer to gather information requested in processing tax compliance to ensure timely and accurate tax return filings and payments with all appropriate US and Canadian agencies.
  • Work closely with accounting to understand financial statement reporting for separate legal entities, including regular review of accounting system and financial statement information to ensure integrity of the reports for all Digital Realty (DLR) tax entities.
  • Understand, manage and perform quarterly / annual REIT compliance tests to ensure that DLR maintains its REIT status including supporting the Tax Director in preparation of projections to monitor distribution requirements.
  • Coordinate with external REIT counsel to complete REIT due diligence as needed.
  • Perform quarterly tax provisions for corporate taxable REIT subsidiaries and foreign subsidiaries to ensure adequate tax reserves have been established.
  • Coordinate the calculation of withholding taxes on quarterly distributions from DLR partnerships in compliance with regulatory state withholding requirement.
  • Coordinate with outside tax advisor to gather information required to maintain accurate tax depreciation schedules.
  • Work with Legal on tax filings/elections (e.g. TRS and check-the- box election, etc.).
  • Coordinate and correspond with taxing authorities in U.S. regarding various notices to ensure accurate regulatory records of all DLR entities. Supervise and support the tax group coordinator to ensure timely filing of US tax returns and payments.
  • Assist with ad-hoc analysis as needed.

Because of the complexity of this role, naturally you will need strong base skills along with the technical knowledge that you earned in the public accounting space, but you will also need outstanding soft skills. The successful candidate will have the confidence to work autonomously along with the ability to ask questions and learn where needed. S/he will bring a strict attention to detail in every area from transactions to projects requiring a good deal of pre-acquisition due diligence through to post-acquisition work with Legal. Flexibility and adaptability will be key, as will be the ability to scale as projects demand.
